My parents are doing a big renovation on the house and are leaving my cat out living by himself for 4 months. We come feed him every day, and check up on him. So far, my cat has settled in nicely and is sticking around the house. He has a cat box shelter from the pet store, with a small table and a carpet covering his house. He is doing fine, but for the next 4 months is this a good plan?

Nope, never leave cats on their own. Other cats could come and spoil their home, or have a fight with it and it could get hurt. Cats prefer to be in the warm.
If I was you, I’d put the cat in a catery, - Better safe than sorry!

Plenty of cats do just fine living outside - think of farm cats etc.. so as long as he seems happy and you check up on him, that’s ok. Be warned though that he may wander off and find nicer lodgings, particularly if any other cat muscles in on his territory.
