If you are talking about taking down walls, then you definitely should talk to a local architect or designer. There are load bearing walls in the house depending on how the home is built will depend on where they are. If you are taking down doors only, then go to HGTV’s website they have lots of great free advice.

I have a handy man service in Ottawa I have many calls from customers that would like to learn reno work and the basics, of home repair, You sound like someone realy to get your hands dirty, Call around and ask your local handy man what he charges for his service,s and will he or she let you help and give you tips , and his work at a discount, Good Luck with your projects Also check with the schools in your town they may have some good advanced stydents to help with a teacher doing the inspection

I teach construction and home remodeling at the adult and high school level. You might find classes available like that in your area. Community colleges many times have construction type classes. I have found that first learning how a house is constructed, give one confidence to tackle many hime improvement projects. There are some good books available at the home centers (Home Depot, Lowes) as well.
