Not easy to answer simply. Different people will give you different explanations, and so far, no-one has come with a satisfactory explanation.
Soms say it’s a world-wde problem, others that it stems from bankers’ greed, others from Britain’s economic policies of the past 12 years.

It’s a bit simplistic to ask for one true cause. There are a number of factors in combination. But basically it was the fact that banks lent a lot of money irresponsibly to people who had no chance of repaying their loans, and hid this by parcelling up the mortgages deceitfully and selling them on to third parties as top-grade investments. Eventually it all had to unravel, and it did, bringing the banks down. The knock-on effect is that banks stopped lending, and this reduced consumer demand, which led to a recession.
